Beta Testers

Prior to the Open Beta phase of testing and development, Renegade X went through 4 closed beta phases. After Open Beta testing started, builds were still tested by this group prior to their public release in order to prevent any game-breaking bugs. This testing was critical because during the early Open Betas there was not any automated patching process, and any game-breaking bugs absolutely had to be discovered before being pushed (since there would generally be several months of time between builds). Once the patcher was added to the game, these groups became largely unused. Below are the members who participated in each phase, sorted by their forum registration date (not their group join date).

Phase 1

Phase 1 was a small invite-only group of players, invited directly by active developers.

Phase 2

Phase 2 expanded the testing group by allowing individuals to apply for beta tester status. Unapproved sharing of in-game media (videos, screenshots, etc) was still prohibited during this phase.

Phase 3

Phase 3 further expanded the testing group by allowing groups of up to individuals to apply for beta tester status. Public sharing of in-game media was approved during this phase, so long as the media did not show any bugs from the game.

Phase 4

Phase 4 was the only closed testing phase after the launch of Open Beta. Members for this group were primarily picked from the two major communities of the time, TheMatrixRen.NET [TmX] and EliteKamikazeTeam. The Phase 4 group was largely responsible for testing Open Beta 4 builds, which included features such as the long awaited automatic patcher integrated into the launcher. Since the automatic patcher was introduced after this group, this group quickly became defunct. Instead regular patches became more common, since players were no longer required to redownload the entire game again to install new builds.
