The Power Plant (Nod) is the source of base power for the Brotherhood of Nod. It is both essential for the Obelisk of Light to function, and tied to production costs. If it is destroyed, the Obelisk of Light will become permanently disabled, and production costs of advanced infantry and vehicles will increase 50% (stacks with destruction of Hand of Nod and Airstrip).
Strategy
While destroying the Obelisk of Light only disables it, destroying the Power Plant has the added bonus of increasing enemy purchase costs. The Power Plant may also be easier to attack in some maps, than the Obelisk. Some maps may have an Obelisk without a Power Plant (Field), while others may have a Power Plant without an Obelisk (WallsFlying).
